Size Guide: How to Measure Your Dog

HOW TO MEASURE

It is important to measure your dog accurately, while s/he is standing up and standing straight. To determine the correct size coat for your dog, please measure, using a tape measure and the diagram below to help you.

The A & B measurements will guide you towards the correct coat size, which go up in 5cm increments. It’s useful to get a friend to help (and hold treats!) If you know your dog’s weight in kg, that’s helpful too but not essential.

If you’re not sure, just send the measurements and Kittydog will do the rest, there’s a lot of variations available. Each garment is handmade, so allow for some minimal variation.

If your dog is standing wonkily (or lying down/sitting), the measurements will all be wonky too.

PLEASE NOTE: It is your responsibility to measure your dog accurately.

A, B, C & E go all the way around. F and D do not!

STANDARD SIZE GUide

Suggestions are included here for standard breeds to give you a starting point. Please note, each coat comes in two different lengths; so the collar measurement will help you to choose between them.

If your dog measures between sizes, consider your dog’s needs and preferences; remember most dogs prefer their tails free for wagging. For non-standard shapes and sizes, or if you're just not sure, please get in touch for advice at kittydog@btinternet.com.

The collar and girth (of Vest) measurement show the size of the garment, so should be slightly bigger than your dog’s actual size. The Jacket has an adjustable tummy strap, so the girth can be varied to suit the wearer.

Both wider and slimmer necklines are available for appropriate breeds. Please remember, all dogs are different and vary in shape and size just like people do, so the typical breed suggestions below are just for guidance. The Kittydog coats made from polar fleece do have some stretch.

DACHSHUNDS & SIGHTHOUNDS

For dachshunds and sighthounds, some breed standard specific patterns are available. Do check the Standard Size Chart though because some dogs, especially dachshunds, might fit a standard pattern.

For those that don’t, further pattern development is ongoing and Kittydog needs your measurements to do that. So please get in touch and let us help you to get a coat that fits properly at kittydog@btinternet.com.

OTHER SHAPES AND SIZES, PUGS, frenchies & wide neck breeds...

For wide chested breeds, cross breeds, and dogs who just don’t seem to be able to get a comfy fit, Kittydog is here to help you. A wide neck pattern is available free of charge for each standard size pattern.

Made to measure garments are available to allow for the best fit within the diversity of shapes and sizes in the wonderful dog world. Kittydog really values the need for a good fitting garment; so please do get in touch for a quote.

We aim to keep prices as close to the nearest standard size as possible. For a rough guide, use the A: Withers to tail measurement to estimate a starting price. There may also be additional pattern fees.

All Kittydog fleeces are handmade, so garments can be made to order to suit your furry friend's needs.

TIPS FOR A HAPPY COAT WEARING DOG

  • Allow your dog to sniff the coat and check it out before putting it on.

  • Talk gently to your dog while the coat goes over the head, new things can be unnerving for some pets. Encourage with treats if it helps.

  • Praise your dog when it puts its coat on, who doesn't like to be told they look nice!

  • Some dogs don't like the noise of the fasteners, consider a vest which has no snaps or velcro.

  • If your dog hasn't had a positive reaction to coats in the past, don't rule out a Kittydog garment. Kittydog started initially for that very reason! Kitty’s legs locked at the very sight of a coat…
